Open consultation on the PRO-MaP recommendations to improve the clarity of methods and protocols in the life sciences
Abstract

PRO-MaP (Promoting Reusable and Open Methods And Protocols) is developing recommendations for actions that the following four stakeholder groups can take to promote sharing of detailed methods and reusable, step-by-step protocols in the life sciences: 1. Researchers, 2. Research performing institutions, 3. Funders, 4. Publishers and editors. PRO-MaP began when a group of scientists and publishers, invited by the Joint Research Centre (the European Commission’s science and knowledge service), met in Ispra, Italy on June 28-29, 2022. Workshop participants discussed strategies for improving the description of methods and reusable step-by-step protocols in scientific pre-prints and peer-reviewed publications in the life sciences.

A preprint describing the PRO-MaP recommendations will be posted in early 2023. During this participatory and interactive discussion, we invite expert feedback from meta-scientists on these recommendations. Attendees are encouraged to share their thoughts about how to improve the recommendations, barriers to uptake and strategies for implementation. The revised recommendations will be published and PRO-MaP members and others from the scientific community and stakeholder groups will work together to facilitate implementation of these recommendations.

Participants can view the draft recommendations here.
