What is the Metascience Conference?

Many scholarly fields conduct descriptive research about the research process. Advocates and reformers have prescriptive ideas about how the research process might be improved. Policymakers, funders, publishers, and other stakeholders enact changes to the social and technical infrastructure of research. All have an interest in whether changes and reforms have their intended effects or unintended consequences that might accelerate or inhibit advancement, translation, and application of research. Together, these researchers and stakeholders are the research and development pipeline for improving the system and practice of research. Metascience 2027 will bring these communities together to share ideas, evidence, and foster a culture of continuous experimentation and improvement.

Research Reform in an Era of Rapid Change

What Works, For Whom, and How?

Metascience 2027 will focus on evidence. As the field matures from identifying challenges and advocating reform to evaluating outcomes, the central question is no longer whether change is needed, but what works.

The conference will examine whether reforms and interventions in the research ecosystem produce the intended improvements. It will also assess our current capacity to measure and evaluate those outcomes and collaborate on areas for improvement.

By bringing together researchers, policymakers, funders, institutions, and other research-on-research enthusiasts, Metascience 2027 will help identify the most promising pathways to move from evidence to action, advancing the transformation of research systems through evidence, openness, and dialogue.

Metascience 2027 is coming to Montreal, Canada!

Join the global metascience community June 14–16, 2027 in one of the world’s leading research cities.

The Tanenbaum Open Science Institute (TOSI) and the Center for Open Science (COS) have partnered to bring Metascience 2027 to Montreal, offering participants a rare combination of scientific excellence, international accessibility, and cultural vibrancy. Home to globally recognized universities, research institutes, and a thriving innovation ecosystem, Montreal is a hub for the kinds of conversations that spark collaboration and accelerate discovery.

Metascience 2027 will be hosted at the Centre Mont-Royal, located in the heart of downtown Montreal. The centre is directly connected to the metro and Montreal’s underground city, and sits just steps from the city’s hotels, restaurants, museums, and the historic Golden Square Mile — making it easy for participants to explore Montreal between sessions.
