We Need More Training but There’s Already Too Much: Research Integrity Training in a Time of Researcher Overload
Abstract

Today’s researcher must deal with an ever-growing list of requirements from funders, universities, and rising standards. To meet these requirements, researchers often need training that covers authorship, conflicts of interest, copyright & licensing, data management, ethics committees, supervision, and more. However, while working to develop or provide training, we often encounter resistance or barriers. Researchers are already overloaded, but at the same time surveys show them asking for training that is more detailed and in-depth. Therefore, we want to ask about how researcher training can be improved and used to assist researchers to be more open, transparent, and rigorous: i) How can deliver training to overloaded researchers that is more appropriate to their needs? ii) How can we engage senior researchers in research integrity training so that they can support their mentees as practices and requirements evolve? iii) What training formats and approaches are most effective? iv) what is missing in currently available research integrity training? The results of these discussions will help us to shape our future researcher training projects.
