
Matthew Clancy leads Open Philanthropy’s Innovation Policy program, where he supports efforts to invent, improve, and diffuse better institutions and practices for science and innovation. Before joining Open Philanthropy, he was Senior Innovation Economist at the Institute for Progress, where he remains a Senior Fellow. He previously served as a research economist at the USDA and as a teaching professor at Iowa State University. In these roles, his research focused on the economics of innovation and science policy. He is also the creator of New Things Under the Sun, a popular online resource summarizing social science research on innovation. His work has been featured by the OECD, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and other organizations. He holds a PhD in Economics from Iowa State University and degrees from the London School of Economics and the University of Cambridge.
