The Role of Metascience in the “Year of Open Science”
Abstract

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy called for 2023 to be the “Year of Open Science,” featuring actions to advance open and equitable research across the federal government. For example, the NIH has issued a Data Management and Sharing policy, effective January 25, to promote the sharing of scientific data. The goal is to accelerate discovery, in part, by providing access to data. This is one part of the larger call to action for federal agencies and other stakeholder groups to address stagnating progress in science at a time of “exponential growth in the volume of new scientific and technological knowledge (Park et al., 2023).”

We will discuss the goals of open science, especially for the behavioral and social sciences, in light of this call for an emphasis on open science and how metascience approaches can help us evaluate the impact of open science practices and policies.
