The ManyManys Collaboratory: Advancing best research practices through cross-taxon Big Team Science
Abstract

Big Team Science (BTS) is a novel approach to scientific discovery, where a large number of researchers collaborate towards a common goal while implementing best practices. This provides several advantages over small-scale research, notably, increased replicability and generalizability. While BTS initiatives investigating the behavior of a single species have met success (e.g., ManyBabies), multi-taxon research is uniquely challenging. For instance, most individual researchers have limited cross-taxon expertise, and inter-species differences (e.g., in motor capabilities) complicate study design and performance comparisons. The ManyManys Collaboratory is an unprecedented BTS collaboration for studying behavior across taxa. Our first goal is to develop stimuli, output measures, and tasks that can provide a meaningful comparison across species. Our second goal is to offer researchers opportunities to reflect on complex BTS workflows through participatory action research, utilizing methods such as questionnaires, hack-a-thons, and discussion panels to refine and develop BTS processes and infrastructure.
