Reforming Standards for the Responsible Conduct of Research – What are We Missing?
Abstract

Conducting responsible research (RR) is essential to the trustworthiness of research findings. It promotes rigorous research and fosters a positive research environment, but we know little about how RR varies across disciplines in practice. Furthermore, existing frameworks such as the Singapore Statement of Research Integrity remain widely used to inform codes and standards of research practice, despite being over a decade old. Our team has been collecting data from the RR literature and experts across a range of disciplines to update and reform existing standards in RR, including adding important perspectives from fields of high technological advancement and societal impact, such as nanotechnology, AI and stem cell research. We propose to lead a discussion among 2023 Metascience delegates on what RR means in a modern ‘post-crisis of confidence’ context across multiple disciplines, and how the concept fits into larger goals of metascience as a field.
